Read full description of the books:
Little Miss spends a great deal of time with her grandmother that she called Big Mama. Each time the young girl goes to see her grandmother she looks at the photo albums, and listens to the stories of when her grandmother was a little girl just like her. She found one picture that really caught her attention, and wanted her grandmother to share the story behind that picture. This is the part of the book that draws the reader into the story to follow along as if they were right there with the grandma and the little girl. The grandmother informs the little girl about how when she was little, another girl was moving in by her dad’s work and she went to go play with her. At the other little girls’ house they ate a “good” snack as the grandma referred to it as. But, when the other little girl came to her house they had may’naise sandwiches and sunshine tea. At the time Big Mama didn’t know that was considered a “good” snack. But she came to understand that just because it wasn’t fancy it was still good.
I loved this book because the whole time I was reading it, I felt as if I were right there listening to Big Mama. The way that Big Mama talked stuck out to me, because it reminded me of my grandma. She enjoyed sharing things about her childhood, which is also like my grandma. This would be a good book to read aloud when it close to Grandparents’ Day, along with books about grandmas from other cultures.

Read information about the authorfrom Contemporary Authors Online: Sandra Belton has published a number of well-received picture books for children in addition to novels for young adults that include the award-winning McKendree. She is perhaps best known for her "Ernestine and Amanda" series about two African-American girls growing up in the 1950s. In an interview with Janice DelNegro for the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books online, Belton noted that the series is enriched by her own experiences as a youngster in small-town West Virginia. "Ernestine and Amanda are the keepers of my childhood memories and dreams," the author remarked. "Their voices echo the ones I heard while chasing lightning bugs and playing at twilight with the kids down the street. The homes they live in and the schools and churches they attend paint a picture of the neighborhoods that nurtured all of us. The events of their lives and the heroes they celebrate are the ones of our heritage."
