Gregg Easterbrook, author of the wildly popular ESPN.com blog "Tuesday Morning Quarterback" (with 2.4 million unique page hits per month), takes on football's place in American society

Gregg Easterbrook is one of the country’s best-known football commentators, having analyzed football on-air for ESPN and the NFL Network. MSNBC calls his ESPN blog "the best and most compelling football column anywhere." With Liberty and Football for All takes an expansive look at our biggest sport. Easterbrook explores these and many other topics:
The real harm done by concussions (It’s not to NFL players)
The real way in which college football players are exploited (It’s not by not being paid)
The reason football helps American colleges to be great institutions (It’s not bowl revenue.)
The way football has aided the revival of American cities (It’s not Super Bowl trophies)
The hidden scandal of the NFL (You’ll have to read the book)

Using his year-long exclusive insider access to the Virginia Tech football program, where Frank Beamer has compiled the most victories of any active NFL or college head coach, Easterbrook shows how VT does things right. Then he reports on all the things wrong with football and moves to examples of how the sport can be reformed to keep it just as popular and exciting, but not as notorious.

Rich with reporting details from interviews with current and former college and pro football players and coaches. With Liberty and Football for All promises to be the most provocative and best-read sports book of the year.

Ebook The King of Sports: Football's Impact on America read Online! I was born in Buffalo, New York and have lived there plus Boston, Brussels, Chicago, Colorado, Pakistan and Washington, D.C. My wife is a State Department official, which accounts for the globe-trotting: currently she is the #2 officer of this http://www.state.gov/j/tip. Personal globe-trotting includes time in Ecuador as Fulbright fellow. We have three children, boys born in 1989 and 1995 and a girl born in 1990.

I’ve published three literary novels and five nonfiction books, with a sixth nonfiction book coming September 2013. The nonfiction is all over the map – economics, theology, psychological, environmental policy. If I had my writing career to do over again, I suppose I would have focused on a single genre, which makes commercial success more likely. Then again, I’ve always written about whatever was on my mind, and feel fortunate to have had that opportunity.

I am proud of my novels, which have gotten great reviews but not otherwise been noticed by the world. I hope someday that will change.

All my adult life, I have been associated with The Atlantic Monthly as a staff writer, national correspondent or contributing editor. No publication can match it for quality and depth, though even I sometimes write letters to the editor complaining about articles.

As a paid hobby, I write the Tuesday Morning Quarterback column for ESPN. In years past, my wife and I would argue about autumn Sundays, because I wanted to watch football while she wanted to take the kids to cultural events or on outings to parks – can you imagine these misplaced priorities! Starting a football column gave me a reason to say, “I have a professional obligation to watch the NFL.” Sole time in our relationship my wife has been unable to think of a comeback.
