This was a disappointment - it started quite well and then, to my mind, just deteriorated and fell apart.
For me to judge a romance to be successful I require a HEA that includes at least a tentative commitment of faithfulness between H/h. I just didn't get that here. I enjoyed the book up until the hero tells his friend that he had proposed to the heroine and states: "Why, not even the expert attentions of my mistress could vanquish thoughts of the little darling from my mind."
This statement really, really put me off.
It is somewhat implied, but never explicitly stated, that he will get rid of his mistress once he is married. Later, while the h (now engaged to the H) is awaiting his return from yet another stint in London her thoughts are: "She wouldn't have been at all surprised if he still did [keep a mistress], and that he had gone to London with every intention of paying her a visit. If it was to be the final meeting, the last before the termination of their liaison, then she could understand and forgive..." Please!
That, coupled with his mocking attitude because she was still 'innocent' after years of marriage to a kind, older man really killed the romance for me.
The hero - a refreshing change from the norm - has definite misogynist tendencies, is rude and overbearing, has a "ruggedly masculine countenance that wasn't even remotely handsome" and yet, true to the cliche, his "name had been linked with some quite exceptional beauties". As far as I am concerned, bringing in his mistresses etc. half-way through the book was just not necessary and detracted from the book rather than adding anything.
The feelings of the h for her dead friend were handled sensitively and there is a (although very slight) mystery regarding the murderer's identity. The book would probably appeal to many people, but I just couldn't get passed the objections mentioned above.
