3,5 stars. Bit disappointed. I'm here for the extra scenes but I guess the novelisation would satisfy me more because there's only like one extra scene? And the art...just isn't really my cup of tea. It just doesn't quite fulfill my expectations. On the plus side, this reads like a more fast-paced, to the point version of the 2009 movie, and I think the pacing works well. The condensation works too, because I feel like all the important scenes are covered and the narrative is efficient, not a single word wasted that doesn't advance the plot.
And I think some stuff is just funnier now considering what happened in Ongoing, for example Hendorff and his banter/antagonism with Kirk. One inconsistency that I spotted was Helmsman McKenna, who became a girl in the Ongoing comics.
Another flaw, that I suppose comes from the pacing, is that this comic sacrifices characterisation for a fast-moving version of the story. But I suppose it's not much of a flaw since this was supposed to be a more condensed version of the movie anyway and it was soon followed by Ongoing, and preceded by Starfleet Academy (both the comic/graphic novel and the YA series). So they got that pretty much covered, plus, as I said, the fast-paced thing works well anyway.
Overall, I think this is a rather fun read if you love the Kelvin/alternate timeline and wants to read more about it.
