Read full description of the books:
Stephen King recently wrote a Kindle Single titled Guns in which he makes a passionate but reasonable argument for specific measures to reduce gun violence. In the essay, he also decries the current dreadful state of discourse in America which he likens to "Drunks in a barroom".
As evidenced by the title of this "rebuttal", Rick Carufel must have skipped the discourse portion of the essay and it doesn't get any better. He is clearly used to hanging out in those literary barrooms. The author's rant is very curious. He ignores most of what King writes and goes for a extreme view of "you're taking away my guns" to the point of paranoia. He doesn't even touch on the idea of universal background check, a most reasonable action that was even accepted by the NRA until a few years ago when the crazies took over. Instead he wanders into blaming psychiatry and anti-depressants for mass murders, a red herring if I ever saw one. He totally ignores the more common gun crimes and shootings which can not be simply waved away with blaming psych-meds. How many gang members do you know take anti-depressants? I agree that effective mental health treatment is central to reducing the type of events like Newtown and Aurora but wouldn't it be simpler to use universal background checks to restrict gun ownership to mentally ill persons as already accepted in most states (but not enforced as I can attest to through my experience in Forensics Mental Health) on top of identifying those at risk and improving treatment?.
But even more disturbing is a paranoia that comes out especially when he is discussing what he sees as media bias and governmental cover-ups. In reading this essay, I got the impression the government is ready to bang down my door any minute. In fact much of it was so close to other things that I read on a few web sites that I was worried that Alex Jones would jump out of my Kindle and start screaming "1776!" in my ears. The author even writes about Sandy Hook and Aurora in a way that reveals that he may have some agreements, if not total, with the asinine hoax theories. That is where he really left me shaking my head.
One more item. Carufel makes an argument that he is so fond of that he says it twice. "We may as well outlaw vans because one of them nearly killed Stephen King." I would like to respond to that . No, Mr. Carufel. We should not outlaw vans just as we do not want to outlaw guns although you like to keep saying that. But we do have laws to keep irresponsible drivers off the road and laws that keep cars from being safety hazards and random killing machines. Is it too much to ask for the same in regards to the equally, if not more, dangerous firearm?
So I actually do recommend Stephen King Don't know Shit as long as you read it with Guns by Stephen King. I'm pretty sure that, after you read both, you will be certain which writer doesn't know shit.
