From the Historical Novel Society's Review of Violet's Problem:
“…the heroine of Martinelli’s slim volume won me over almost instantly, and the style had me snickering and sometimes laughing throughout.”
“I adored this sweet little book and look forward to continuing my acquaintance with Violet in the future.”
The Violet Strange Mysteries are young-adult detective stories set in 1899 in Gilded Age New York City. Each of the nine stories is a major case for Violet Strange, a debutante and secret high-society detective. Book 4 in the series is Violet and the Dreaming Lady in which Violet Strange, a Gilded-Age debutante, tries to find a millionaire’s lost will and testament that was hidden by a sleepwalking woman, risking her own future in the hope of saving a family from destitution.
The protagonist of the nine mystery stories is Violet Strange. Violet is seventeen years old when the first book begins, in March of the year 1899, and Violet is set to debut into New York City’s high-society. The nine books in the series follow Violet’s detecting career and life through the rest of the year, ending on New Year’s Day 1900. It is not only Violet’s life-experience that grows during the course of her work. Violet’s heart grows too, to encompass friends she never imagined she would have befriended, and to discover the love of her life in a man she could never have imagined would return that love.
Candida Martinelli based the novels on short stories published in 1915 by The Mother of Detective Fiction, A. K. Green, in the short story collection The Golden Slipper and Other Problems for Violet Strange, but they are completely re-imagined and re-written for pre-teens and teens today. The first girl-detective, read the series from her first case, the one that launches her career as a secret high-society detective, Violet's Problem. The estimated Lexile Measure of the books is 715L, comparable to The Nancy Drew Mysteries, meaning the books are of the same reading level as the classic young-adult mystery series.
Candida Martinelli is webmistress of the popular entertainment and reference site Candida Martinelli's Italophiles Site at Italophiles.com. She is the author of the cozy-murder-mystery novel An Extra Virgin Pressing Murder, and of the young-adult mystery novel series The Violet Strange Mysteries. She is the editor of A Collection of Short Mysteries.
