Read full description of the books:
GTO is my favorite sexist comic. Reading it is a guilty pleasure. Somehow it has managed to be one of the most gender-typed manga I’ve read and still kept me excited for each new volume, right up to the end. The story is ridiculous and ridiculously fun, and despite all his numerous faults, I always end up rooting for the idiotic gang biker-turned-teacher in all his escapades, from saving students to wacky attempts to lose his tyrannical virginity. The nearly-immortal teacher can turn the bitterest of enemies into loyal followers. The large cast contains many fascinating people who, despite Fujisawa’s penchant for dramatic flair, could potentially exist.
My favorite things about the art are the toning and the scratchy inking style that still manages to look smooth. Though it’s quite clear where the artist’s sexual preferences lie, he’s smart enough to make some of the men look good as well. He uses clear gutters and no overlapping, and while there’s nothing particularly creative about the layout, he varies panel shape and size to establish visual rhythm. The frequent splash pages are almost always great. He’s not afraid of backgrounds, and the body language is personalized and expressive.
Humor, a fast-pace, and good art keep the manga rolling right up to the somehow disappointing end.
It’s not that the ending was bad: it has all the action, drama, and humor of any other GTO story. But that’s the problem. Having already set the bar for these three things so high, Fujisawa has difficulty surpassing it in a way grand enough to feel like a final climax. Instead, it just feels like another GTO story. It doesn’t seem like an end. I guess the idea is that everything is back to normal, and there will be plenty more stories to come. We just won’t get to read them. Which is probably just as well, because Fujisawa has already pulled out more stories from his protagonist’s circumstance than the average writer would dare. Yet, I have a feeling that if he had wanted to, he could have made another ten volumes and still kept his readers hooked.
