Lots of people on Goodreads rave about the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. About how good a writer of military epic fantasy Erikson is. I haven't read Malazan, although I've had two false starts into Gardens of the Moon. But here's a challenge to every fan of Malazan: Read Monarchies of God by Paul Kearney.
This is the best book so far in the entire series. The quality of the writing is much improved, excellent to say the least. The characters have come an awfully long way. Corfe Cear-Inaf is seriously challenging Richard Cypher of the Sword of Truth series and Matrim Cauthon of the Wheel of Time series as my best ever character in epic fantasy.
The plot is gripping. It's intense. It's action packed and fast paced. It's also vivid. The whole thing seems so real, you're swept off with the beautiful writing. Really, this is one of the most underrated books I've ever read. 3.9 average ratings on GR, wtf!
Asides the brutality, the writing is in such a way that it also stresses on the pitiful after effects of war and mass bloodshed. I was touched. To cap it off, at the end, Corfe laid eyes on his wife. The writing that described that particular scene was reminiscent of Faith of the Fallen. It very nearly brought tears to my eyes, and that's saying a lot as I'm not typically an emotional person.
Excellent book. Now that the war is over, the next two books promise to be filled with not as much violence, but an equal amount of politicking.

Paul Kearney was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, in 1967. He went to a local grammar school, and then to Lincoln College, Oxford, where he read Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, and Middle English
Shortly after leaving Oxford, he went on a solitary climbing trip to the Isle of Skye, and it was after tumbling off a mountain there that the character of Michael Riven first came to him. The first half of The Way to Babylon was composed shortly after, and taken up by the literary agents Campbell, Thomson & McLaughlin. Richard Evans at Victor Gollancz bought the book, and Gollancz then published Kearney's next seven books, including the Monarchies of God series.
In the eight years subsequent to the publication of The Way to Babylon, Kearney lived in Copenhagen, New Jersey, and Cambridgeshire, but at present he makes his home a stone's throw from the sea in County Down, with his wife, two dogs, a beat-up old boat, and far too many books.
