Read full description of the books:
It was with some horror that I started this book and realised that I'd never actually read a Black Library novel by James Swallow, my experience of him thus far restricted to a few Blood Angels short stories and his Star Trek novels. So it's fair to say that I didn't know exactly what to expect, but as you can undoubtedly infer from the star rating, I wasn't disappointed.
That headline rating does actually mask a little nuance because a bit like False Gods (which I also gave five stars) this was slow to get going, the effort of catching up to where we left proceedings at Isstvan III while we examined the buildup to the betrayal from the perspective of the Death Guard a little hard going at points. But so worth it. Once we're all back on the titular Eisenstein and ready to go this book never looks back and never lets up. What James does *exceptionally* well is his portrayal of ship combat, the wide angle cinematic view of massive starships, firing lances, taking damage, burning engines. In fact, knowing him as a Star Trek writer, you can clearly see the Star Trek in it and I mean that as the highest possible complement. Running throughout the sequence of the 'flight' and its immediate aftermath is also a fabulous sense of the perils of the warp, which put me in mind of the way the ocean was seen by ancient sailors; respected, feared, capricious and inherently unknowable. I read a lot of historical fiction so that was a cool parallel, and coming from professional men aboard these enormous gothic starships was particularly jarring, in-keeping with the whole process of faster-than-light travel through hell!
The results of the ship's escape from Istvaan, without giving too much away, leaves Garro et. al. in something of a pretty pickle and it was a gripping experience as a reader to have absolutely no idea whatsoever how they were going to get out of it. Indeed throughout this book the solutions to problems are innovative, and rarely do they involve the serendipitous arrival of more guns or shooting at something harder.
All in all a joy to read if a bit slow to get going, but impossible to put down once it did. The character of Nathaniel Garro definitely grew on me as the story wore on, and I could almost feel James growing into *him* at the same time. Now I see what all the fuss is about, I'm looking to catching up on the Garro audios
